The bond between dragon and octopi
By Yvonne
Arak has once again returned to the seas, this time to find the mythical Ice Dragons. Accompanying him on his journey is fellow dragons healer Dorali and Taron and his best friend and octopus Scree with her mate Orm. Drakor is an Ice Dragon, he has a talent of predicting danger, but when his clan dismisses his warnings, he goes off to look for proof. Injured and weak, can the dragons escape the volcano.
It’s been a while since I read Dragon Dreamer, but as soon I started reading this book, I was transported straightaway back to the ocean. Drakor was so like Arak, ridiculed by his clan for being different. However, when he was found by Arak, he found a kinship. Seeing Arak a highly thought of member of his group, gave Drakor hope.
With the pending eruption from the volcanoes, this story is one big adventure. Arak and Scree are working to a deadline to rescue their families, but it does not help that other species are working against them and Scree must put all her cunningness to use to survive. The addition of the Ice dragons enables the author to add different dragon skills to the story, and you get to learn just how more powerful they are and the uphill struggle Drakor must convince them to move.
The idea of reading is to take you to another world, and this story does that 100%. I got so involved in the story that I forget that I was reading about creatures as they are so human. The fine details add depth to the story, and the picturesque scenes help you visualize how beautiful the ocean is.
As like Dragon Dreamer, this will be perfect to read to your young ones as a bedtime story but will be enjoyed by all ages.
I hope that Arak’s adventures continue.

Arak returns to the Winter Festival, where dragons carve glaciers with fire and toss lightning bolts in the clouds. But a terrible illness strikes the clan. Fantasy, friendship, and understanding.
By M. Blackeagle

Beautifully written fantasy book that combines the sea creatures with our beloved loveable dragons. Scree (the healer octopus) takes a chance on healing a large beast (Arak the dragon) after he crashes and is terribly wounded a friendship develops that crosses all barriers from language to habitat. Their friendship teaches trust, honor, friendship, and peace. My son read the book after me, and he laughed and giggled and told me he wanted to be like Arak and have amazing adventures and meet new creatures. Now he wants a pet dragon, so I bought him a stuffed one that he has named Arak. I read the story to my 4-year-old daughter to her delight and mine she stayed still to listen and giggle. She wants to be Screw so that she can heal animals. She has tried to convince my husband and me that her toys need to go to the doctor so that they can stay healthy. Lol. I highly recommend this book if you love fantasy. This book teaches as well as entertains

Beautiful Coloring Book!

J.S. Burke’s Fantasy Snowflakes Coloring Book is a unique and beautiful coloring/activity workbook. It contains snowflake designs inspired by the meditative practice of mandala drawing and by the events and characters from the author/artist’s science fantasy children’s Dragon Dreamer series. Each snowflake pattern is accompanied by facts about the animal or plant featured in the design and occasionally references quotations from the series. At the end of the book, the designs are re-featured as ornament-sized drawings, so one might color, laminate, and hang in a window or on a tree.

I love all of the designs, but my favorites are the Tree-of-life, Mangrove Roots, and the Edelweiss Fairy snowflakes. I am, however, a bit concerned about coloring in the smaller ornament versions, as one would need a very fine pointed medium with which to color in the details. But, I still love the ornament concept, even if I wish they were slightly bigger.

I would recommend this to any child or adult who loves to color and loves craft making. It may even inspire you to learn more about The Dragon Dreamer books.

Amazing second book in a fantastic series
October 25, 2016

This book starts out with a bang. Lightning and a Dragon on thin ice, literally. It grabs your attention and never lets go. The descriptions are so detailed that you can picture everything in your mind, but not so detailed that it slows the story. We join our friends Scree, Arak, and their group as they go legend tripping looking for Ice Dragons. So many stories, do they really exist? Scree and Arak will surely find out if the lightning doesn’t strike them first.

I loved the first book as being introduced into a world of Dragons and Octopi was amazing. This book is an even bigger adventure. I hope these books are made into audiobooks as some stories are meant to be told out loud, and these are stories that should be heard. Of course, you need an actual copy of the book also to enjoy the fantastic drawings throughout. This, like the first book, is an awesome adventure for all ages. The new characters introduced are fresh and add to the journey. Drakor is a complex and fascinating addition. The characters draw you into their enchanting and sometimes dangerous world. Scree and Arak remain my favorite characters. The pace is perfect. It is truly a journey that makes you wonder what will happen next. I can not recommend this book enough.

The Dragon Dreamer by J.S. Burke

The Dragon Dreamer by J. S. Burke is definitely not your typical dragon story. As I began to read, I was confused about how a dragon and an octopus could become friends and communicate at all. The storyline is very creative and original, a fantasy with heart, courage, love, friendship and great imagery. A beautiful story is woven with legends and wonderful storytelling, layered with stories of how they became the creatures/beings they are today. I did not want to put it down.
Arak is a young dragon who feels different from the rest of his clan, has been teased for his unique gifts and treated poorly by his brother. I think this relates to bullying and the problems our youth suffer through today. Arak is a wonderful character whom you cheer for and wish him only good things. He has feelings for Zarina, his best friend and this is another layer to the story.
Through an ice storm, Arak is injured and first meets Scree, a wise and open-minded octopus, and the healer for her pod. They learn to communicate with body and sign language and become friends while Arak heals. Scree is very courageous and forward thinking. Once Arak is healed they go on to convince his clan and her pod to interact, trade goods, exchange stories, and learn about each other’s culture. The pod, clan, and individuals of each experience various issues and challenges during the story and they have wonderful adventures together. This book is very well written and really sucks you in. It leaves you with a smile, good feelings and wanting more.
The author is a marine biologist, teacher, and writer. The story includes actual characteristics of Octopi and other creatures of the ocean. Her love of sea life is very obvious and teaches the reader as she entertains us. She creates a wonderful and seemingly realistic world where dragons exist and their culture more like a true telling of history than fiction. I highly recommend this book to other adults and children. I cannot wait to read the next book and see where Arak and Scree’s adventures take them next!
Note: There is a glossary in the back, which also includes information about the sea life and other words used throughout the book.
There is slight violence as found in nature, attacks on another species to protect the clan and when a Squid attacks.

Intricate looking, but not stressful.

This book is so delightful. The designs are intricate but don’t have itty bitty areas that are too hard to color and just cause stress. Perfect for anyone who loves to daydream while coloring. So relaxing. My daughter’s favorite is the dolphin design. She said she was pretending to be a mermaid swimming with the dolphins while coloring.

Another amazing story by JS Burke!

Dragon Lightning (Dragon Dreamer Book 2)

The golden dragons and their octopi friends go in search of the legendary ice dragons. Another amazing story by J. S. Burke. Her stories are about compassion, friendship, dreaming big and striving to accomplish the improbable.

After reading through this second Dragon Dreamer book, I am convinced that her books would make a great addition to elementary school libraries and classrooms. There is so much education slipped into this fun, youthful, fantasy world. Science and exploration along with environmental issues, cultural diversity and acceptance, charity and generosity, political systems with different leadership structures engaging in cooperative trade agreement treaties, etc… all in an enjoyable, entertaining package of dragons and octopi with a squid tossed in for good measure. The adventure is expertly penned and draws in even the mature reader. The older reader recognizes the educational value and the children are introduced to valuable life lessons in a fantasy world of intriguing adventure and interesting characters.

Truly refreshing and enjoyable.

First, this book is a real page-turner. Yes, it is written for a younger audience, but this reader feels it is best read by all ages. This author has touched the heart of all things real: friendship, honor, caring, and kindness.

This story revolves around Arak, a young dragon who is tired of being told what to do and picked on like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was in his story. Arak ventures out to prove himself but alas, he gets in a bit of a mess. To the rescue comes Scree, an octopus of unbelievable understanding. And the adventures begin, some good, some bad, but all meaningful.

As for the writing in this book, I was amazed. The amount of information given to the reader is crafted so well you feel as if you are in this world. Character development and communication are refreshing and clear. Also, the underwater world which this author is very familiar with is expressed and explained to give the reader a clear understanding and appreciation for marine life.

I will personally recommend this book to all readers.

Spend an afternoon with these spectacular designs and feel the stress melt away!

You don’t have to be a fan of the Dragon Dreamer series (although I am) to appreciate the intricate designs in this beautifully designed coloring book. You can spend blissful hours coloring these kaleidoscopic designs that include sea creatures, fantasy creatures, and more. I spent a whole afternoon completely lost in the process — a great way to power down when you need a moment to de-stress. The Most Unique, Fully-Realized Dragon Books Ever

This is the second Dragon Dreamer book. If you haven’t read the first one, you can still completely enjoy Dragon Lightning. If you have read the first one, you’ll be happy to meet your favorite characters again when they return for a new adventure that introduces the legendary ice dragons.

Drakor, an ice dragon, is the hero of this new story. Coming from a dragon culture where might makes right, he is burdened with foresight that a disaster awaits his island, but no one will listen to him because he’s not the strongest. Can he, with the help of his new friends and the new skills they share with him, help him to save his clan?

So, why the claim that this series is, has the most unique and fully-realized dragons? The world-building has scientific, instead of magical, underpinnings. The author creates complex cultures for her creatures in which all the details, from how dragon lightning is generated to how the intricate, beautiful dragon nests are created, are explained by physics, chemistry, and biology. Also, the reader gets full immersion into the art, history, social norms and foods of several different cultures on a level that other books/series just don’t match. How these cultures clash and come together in complicated ways is one of the author’s favorite themes.

But, the real question is if this is a good story? Yup. You’ll be cheering for Drakor!
