Holiday Cozy Mystery

March 3, 2018Format: Kindle Edition

This was my first Emlyn Goode Mystery, but it won’t be my last! Author Susan Lynn Solomon has created a wonderful cozy mystery series, and this holiday novella is a delightful crash course into it.

When the police throw a Christmas bash, it is merry mayhem as everyone is surprised by the grisly secret Santa gift. Although her cop boyfriend tells her repeatedly to stay out of it, Emlyn Good tries to figure out the mystery. After all, where else will she get material for her next book. As the story progresses, readers get to know Emlyn, her family and cats well. While it is clear that the characters have, for the most part, been introduced and developed previously, Ms. Solomon presented her characters in a way that I felt I knew them.

‘Twas The Season is a good holiday cozy mystery that fans of the series are sure to enjoy.

A psychic medium once said that if you find a random dime, it is a sign that someone that you have loved and lost is thinking of you. A DIME IS A SIGN –SHERRILL S. CANNON

a dime is a sign

A psychic medium once said that if you find a random dime, it is a sign that someone that you have loved and lost is thinking of you.

A Dime is a Sign Through Time

If you find a dime,

You will know that I’m

Sending thoughts of love

Through the veil of time.

Ten cents with a silver shine,

A sense sent you to help remind

That someone who left you behind

Is always living in your mind.

Sending love and vibes,

Felt as psychic sighs …

The ones that you miss,

Send you a kiss …

Sherrill S. Cannon’s second book of poetry contains messages written through the years in poetic form that put feelings into words. As a teacher, many of her poems helped counsel troubled teens and friends.

There are three sections in the book: Heads, Spinning, and Tails … (Love & Loss: Coin Toss?). The variety of lyrical poetry forms include free verse, blank verse, haiku, and sonnets, while some are just playing with words!

Hopefully, this is also a book of healing.

Sherrill S. Cannon, a former teacher and grandmother of ten, is the author of nine acclaimed rhymed children’s books, plus a recent award-winning book of poetry (A Penny for Your Thoughts), which together have received 63 national and international book awards since 2011. She also wrote seven published plays for elementary school children that have been performed in over 25 countries. Most of her children’s books emphasize consideration for others. Married for 58 years, she and her spouse are now retired, live in Pennsylvania, and travel in their RV from coast to coast, spending time with their children and grandchildren, and sharing her books along the way!

Envelop yourself in the tenderly flowing words of romantic poetry in the unforgettably lyrical collection, A Dime Is A Sign: Poems of Love & Loss (Feelings Into Words) by Sherrill S. Cannon. Life is full of love and loss, but at times we experience our feelings and emotions so intensely, we can’t put them into words. Allow the soft fluidity of the gentle poetry to caress your soul and bring comfort to your mind as you read through the sublime sonnets, poems, haiku, blank verse, and free-flowing verses. Each poem is meant to help convey a moment of deep emotion, and speak straight to the soul to help you better process each unique stage of love you experience. The delicately soothing words invite you to float lightly among the author’s words and get lost in love.
A Dime Is A Sign: Poems of Love & Loss (Feelings Into Words) by Sherrill S. Cannon is a breathtaking book of romantic poetry. As a school teacher, wife of fifty-eight years, mother, and grandmother, Cannon has lived her words, writing them down throughout the years to help counsel teens and friends through love and heartache. Love and romance are beautiful, but loss can be tragically painful. We often ask ourselves, “Is it worth the pain to love?” The poems in this collection have answered with a resounding, “yes.” The words moved me. Every word of every line held beauty and meaning. The poetry is based on the different stages of love — from young, new love, to older forbidden love — and the verses in this book were written to speak to both young teens and older adults. 5 Stars – Reviewed By Alyssa Elmore for Readers’ Favorite

City born and bred, Hart Stewart possesses the gift of psychometry—the psychic ability to discover facts about an event or person by touching inanimate objects associated with them. Since his mother’s death, seventeen-year-old Hart has endured homelessness, and has learned ways to keep his illiteracy under wraps. He eventually learns of a great-aunt living in Fairy Falls, and decides to leave the only life he’s ever known for an uncertain future.

Diana MacGregor lives in Fairy Falls. Her mother was a victim of a senseless murder. Only Diana’s unanswered questions and her grief keeps her going, until Hart finds her mother’s lost ring and becomes a witness to her murder.

Through Hart’s psychic power, Diana gains hope for justice. Their investigation leads them into the corrupt world threatening Fairy Falls. To secure the town’s future, Hart and Diana must join forces to uncover the shocking truth, or they risk losing the true essence of Fairy Falls forever.Lauren M. This novel might be the BEST book for summer reading EVER. It’s fun, it’s entertaining, and it takes place in an idyllic tourist town that thrives during the summer season. It also revolves around a whodunit-style mystery plot that genuinely had me guessing until the very end. And although this is very definitely a Young Adult novel, it will have no problem appealing to adults too. I’m not a huge YA reader myself and I adored the characters and the story.

The story starts off with Hart, a teenager who has lost pretty much everything and washes up in Fairy Falls, the idyllic town mentioned above. Hart’s only living relative, his Aunt Gertie (who is so awesome, one of my favorite characters), owns a huge blueberry farm and lives in Fairy Falls and agrees to take him in once she finds out his mother, her niece, was murdered the previous year. That’s where the intrigue starts. There’s a killer on the loose in Fairy Falls and they seem to be targeting Hart’s family and anyone related to them, as well as people related to Diana MacGregor, one of the first friends Hart makes in Fairy Falls and the daughter of the town’s mayor. That’s all I’ll say about the plot, because I don’t want to include spoilers, but suffice to say that the mystery includes a lot of unexpected twists and turns, and also moments of hilarity that balanced the suspense nicely.

This is the second book I’ve read by this author and one thing I want to note is that I really appreciate this writer’s positive energy. Both of the novels I’ve read by her left me feeling good and made me laugh and smile throughout reading them, even though there are also moments of wondering if the characters are going to make it through. Blackflies and Blueberries really is the perfect beach read because it’s engaging but also relaxing. I came away from this book feeling lighter and also like I definitely want to check out the first book in the series (although this one can be read as a standalone novel, no problem).

I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves contemporary YA, YA fantasy, mystery, suspense, and action/adventure. It hits the sweet spot on all counts across these genres.

Cherime MacFarlane is an excellent author. I’m familiar with her realistic romances, but in Planet Crisis she demonstrates that she is equally adept at co-writing excellent science fiction stories too.

From the atmospheric cover, to the engaging storyline to the well-crafted prose Planet Crisis is a quality read. At novella length, this is a story that can be enjoyed in one sitting, and therefore is ideal for when you have an hour to spare or are looking to offer your mind an enjoyable, diverting break.

Highly recommended. I also suggest you check out the author’s extensive back catalogue, especially if you have an interest in romance or Alaska.

V.E.VINE VOICE3.0 out of 5 stars Charming BookReviewed in the United States on December 31, 2018Verified PurchaseIt’s Never Too Late for Love: Everyone Deserves a Fairy Tale Ending by Marsha Casper Cook is a charming and cozy book for those who enjoy a clean, fun story. Noah Meyers is a confirmed bachelor whose Mom is constantly trying to fix him up with women. Unfortunately none of these women pan out in the love connection department. When Noah walks into a pet store and ultimately adopts one of the dogs, his life is about to change, and change in a big way. A magical, talking pet might be just the thing, and indeed this is where the plot goes, in all of its crazy ways. You will find the characters amusing, the dialogue fun and engaging, and the romance realistic. The author has a way with words, creating a fun story that many would wish could happen to them. A light, romantic comedy, this book is highly recommend for a fun read to escape for a while.

Mari Collier is a masterful writer, character creator and story teller. This is my first of Mari’s full-length books (I’ve read all her “Twisted Tales” books and loved them), and it won’t be the last. From her startling beginning to her brilliant ending, I enjoyed the story of an amnesia-stricken man who crash lands on a foreign planet. Yet, some things seem strangely familiar to him, and he seems to know something about surviving in a foreign land. It’s not until the very end that we discover his origins — at the same time that he does. The book is fascinating in its descriptions and I followed with interest what happens. I highly recommend you read this! Mari ROCKS!

Goldy’s Baby Socks is the funny and heartwarming story of a family who almost had to move because their cat, Goldy filled their house with her surprise gifts. Goldy was a pretty gold colored stray that was taken in by Lucy’s family. Lucy, her brother and her parents had no idea when they adopted Goldy that the fun and the sleepless nights, were about to begin!
Overall thoughts:

I read this cute picture book with my two girls. They both loved the story and the beautifully done illustrations. The girls loved reading about Goldy and how she treated socks as if they were her baby kittens. The laughed as Lucy’s home became filled with socks and much more as Goldy practiced carrying a baby in her mouth like all mama cats do.
What really helped my girls love this story is we have a neighborhood cat that looks just like Goldy in the book. So now my girls call our neighborhood cat…you guessed it, Goldy.
This is a great book for the animal lover in your family, for those who have a mama cat with kittens on the way, or for those who love a fun story to read as a family.

osh Abbott knew nothing of the paranormal world. The stories told by his beloved great-grandfather were just that: stories. He wanted nothing more than to serve his country. Joining the US Marine Corps, qualifying and excelling as a Scout Sniper gave him an immense sense of pride. Then, whilst on a mission in the Middle East, he wakes to find himself in a place, where an unknown organization will teach him the true meaning of Hell.

Dylann Creed was a cougar-shifter, born of shifter parents. Blaming herself for her mother’s death when she was a child, she rebelled against her father’s need to keep her safe by fleeing the family home, and making her living as a model with the help of her high school friend and photographer, Eric. Until one day, she comes across a male cougar caught in a trap.

Josh and Dylann. Will Dylann be able to heal Josh of both the mental and physical scars inflicted by those wanting to force him to change to a creature he had not believed existed? A wonderfully written story that combines trauma, grief and healing in a paranormal romance. The story revolves around Josh, a Marine sniper that gets abducted by a secret organization that performs experiences on him and others, changing him into a shifter. After escaping his captor, he lives in solitude as a cougar until he gets caught in a trap. Unbeknownst to him, the property he’s living on belongs to a natural born shifter named Dylann who frees him from the trap. They both hit it off but each can tell that there’s plenty of trauma and pain. There’s plenty of action and drama that will keep you guessing until the end. No spoilers but I do highly recommend this one!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun but creepy quick read!

What a gem of a book! These are some quite amusing little tales! How many times have you said “if only the dead could talk” or how many times have you walked through a cemetery and read the names and dates on the stones and wondered how they died? Oh, well maybe that’s just me! I do it all the time. Well now, in this book (series actually) the dead do talk, and they trying tell you how they think they died. It is a very interesting concept for a story. I liked it!

I liked the whole feeling the stories had – It really does feel like the people are just sitting down and talking directly to you telling you their story. It feels very personal. Like I wanted to offer them coffee.

My favorite one was actually the shortest, and… Oh my gosh!
The Betrayal, about a dentist, kind of gave me the creeps! I hate the dentist anyway so this one hit home, but thank goodness I actually like my dentist and have a good one! Otherwise this story would be giving me nightmares.
