Meanwhile, Adam Ludsgarden, Sebastian’s nephew, has sunk deeper into depression due to the loss of his best friend Curtis Brown. Adam has secluded himself in his room and only comes out when necessary, and where Sebastian fails to try with him, Jaysen finds the proper words to sooth his pain.
But as Dawn starts to show her true colours and the way she feels, everything starts to spiral downward under the same roof. Can Sebastian hold everything together? Can he keep the peace? Can he keep his feelings in check after everything that had happened before with Jaysen? The suspicions grow intense, and finally Dawn Turlo is exposed to the truth. What Sebastian and Jaysen find out is astonishing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Short and creepyReviewed in the United States on July 31, 2016I enjoy short stories and collections, especially creepy ones. And I take into account that they are just nibbles, not complete stories.

Some of these were great. They gave me the shivers and I truly thought the characters got what they deserved. And a couple had me a bit confused. Perhaps because the dead were too.

The dead speak from their graves in Golden Stone Cemetery. They have some ghastly tales to tell. Just how wicked were they to be buried and forgotten?. Would they repent if they could? Do they lust for revenge? Are their souls worth saving?

The answers lie in these pages. It takes talent to spin good tales using so little words, and this author passed my test. While the stories are short, they leave a lasting impression.

This is one that I couldn’t stop reading until I read the last word. Several of the stories had me thinking long afterwards. That’s why I’ll be reading more from this author.

To quote R.L. Stine: “Beware, you’re in for a scare!”

I received this book for my honest review.

Michael and Brenda Moretti supported their son, Bryan, to open his own book store because of his passion for reading and kept nearly every novel he read. Bryan Moretti ended up filing the garage with boxes of them. Not to soon after opening the shop a few city blocks from the house, he and his father get a phone call on a cold February morning. Brenda had died in a car accident, which breaks Bryan’s heart, and leads both Michael and Bryan down dark paths. To what length do they go to deal with their grief? Will one of Bryan’s pen pals be his savior? Is there a light at the end of a very dark tunnel?

About Paul Nosach

I was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario. Ever since Junior high school, I have been writing (staying up at odd hours of the night). Only recently have I thought of music to push me. Every book I’ve written has a soundtrack, which are carefully selected songs (from popular artists to the mundane). I always start writing and give myself a deadline of four months to complete a novel. But as we all know, personal deadlines don’t always pan out in our favour.
My ideal night for writing:
1) A hot cup of tea.
2) A crisp, rainy evening.
3) The best music.
I usually start writing at eleven at night, and don’t stop until my brain is mush, or I can’t spell properly.

Emlyn Goode is a writer who also happens to be a witch. Or maybe it’s the other way around. She, and her creator Susan Solomon, live in upstate New York near Niagara Falls. In this outing, Emlyn attends a meeting of her writers group and gets astrally transported to an area amusement park that’s being torn down to put up condos. She’s prompted in this trip by a new member of her group. When that new member turns up dead, Emlyn finds herself compelled to investigate. It doesn’t help that she’s a suspect and her new boyfriend, the assistant Chief of Police, has to treat her as a suspect.

The book is set around Halloween, and I happened to read it while waiting for trick-or-treaters at my house, so I found it especially timely. It’s a good cozy mystery. Emlyn needs to use her skills as a witch and good old gumshoe work to crack this case. Oh, and she’s helped by Elvira, the “talking” cat. I found this book very enjoyable.

Review of Chance by Carolyn Bowen

Chance is a gripping psychological thriller that takes the lid off the underbelly of Atlanta, Georgia, the various cultures at play, the sleaze, the Chinese mafia. Adding to the intrigue, the involvement of the CIA. Meet tough, no-nonsense lawyer Sydney Jones, her beefy bodyguard-lover Walker and washed-up rock star Roxanne who attempts to lure Walker back to her side and ends up accidentally dead for her trouble. I particularly enjoyed the complexity of Sydney’s unexpected and unwanted pregnancy.

The narrative has a strong forward drive that makes for very fast reading. Written in third person personal, the story flits seamlessly from character to character in a fluid jump cut style, an approach that takes a moment to get used to but works well. Bowen’s pastiche of character-led vignette’s adds to the tension, lending a sense of urgency. Sacrificed is the deep point of view of the contemporary thriller – this technique applies especially to psychological thrillers – and Chance is light on dialogue and long action scenes, again, key drivers of the thriller genre. Nevertheless, Bowen has deployed a narrative style that captures the reader and keeps them turning the pages until the very end. Well written with good plotting and pacing and enough intrigue and twists to keep you on your toes, Chance will keep you guessing, waiting for the pay off at the end. Recommended to those after a lighter read in the thriller genre. Chance will also appeal to those after strong female leads.
