Tonath is a planet in danger of being torn apart. Only one can inherit the knowledge to one day save the Tonathian people, and her name is Marika.
It’s been seventeen years since her father passed. Coming of age, she inherits a cattle hold, a trust account, and many gifts. One special gift is a chest, which comes with instructions that will guide her to the Bergman Mountains.
With a spaceship and the knowledge of three ancient civilizations, will she have time to access it all.. or will the Star Shifts hide the information, and drive her into the arms of her childhood love?
December 31, 2018Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseThe makings of this story lie in the first of Ms. Collier’s books of Tonath which told of the birth of a young girl named Marika. She was a descendant of the Justinians, space travelers who settled Tonath earlier. Her brilliance and ability as an engineer enabled a whole new generation of Tonathians to escape the rigors of “star shifts” causing major catastrophes on Tonath. If you love a good science fiction novel then you should start with the first Mari Collier wrote and read through her entire series of books. They are all excellent, present exceptional characters well drafted, and story lines which keep you reading furiously. I thoroughly enjoyed this tale of a woman coming of age, becoming a leader despite all the machinations of self serving men. Women grace the lives of all who have contact with them. Mari Collier graces us all with her skills as an author.

There’s a thread of unity amid battles, gunfights and arguments that is woven through this Sci-Fi Western novel from the beginning until the end. These factions are Silver or Green, something the inhabitants of Tonath find disheartening, because the disagreements about the correct star path leads to war and suffering. One character by the name of Brother Amos persists. As a Seeker, he’s rather impartial to war. In his opinion, a good map of the stars will provide clear answers and the best Pathway. Only time will tell which side, is correct about their assumptions. There are so many stars that need to be charted and many things to learn. We find him traveling with a group of Wayfarers, moving as far away from danger as possible. Among the Wayfarers is Venta, a single woman with a dream about building a refuge for divorced women called the Haven–and Jack Donald–a man with two hearts–from Thalia—another planet–who loves her. They need to escape the Green Marauders, Bentz and the Mechs so that Brother Amos can build an institute of his own and say, “We are neither Silver, nor Green. We are the Silver and the Green.”
Shakazhan begins where Lone Wolf ended, with the precipitous exit of John Riley. Aided by the evil Kahlea, Riley has disappeared to parts unknown and it’s up to Wil, Matilda and the crew of Flotilla, to find him. With the help of some powerful new friends, they once more pursue Riley to parts unknown.
November 9, 2013Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseShakazhan is the continuing saga of the Lone wolf series. Set in 3032 in deep space Wil VanLipsing and his wife Captain Matilda are on the heels of Wil’s evil son John Riley whose ship has crashed on a remote planet. John has been assimilated by an evil race after injuries require some small modifications. The action ramps up as they must stop the evil race from taking over. Written with the same wonderful characters as before including Mark Slatterly the group is drawn into battle with a few new surprises. What will Ms. Oakes think of next to entertain her readers with? I enjoyed this book just as I had with LONE WOLF. When you read this series you feel the camaraderie of the shipmates and laugh at the situations and enjoy the steamy romances. This series has something for sci-fi and romance lovers alike. There is plenty of action yet this book is aimed at an 18+ audience. I highly recommend the books to fans who like a bit of everything in a story.

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 9, 2020Verified PurchaseCherime MacFarlane is an excellent author. I’m familiar with her realistic romances, but in Planet Crisis she demonstrates that she is equally adept at co-writing excellent science fiction stories too.
From the atmospheric cover, to the engaging storyline to the well-crafted prose Planet Crisis is a quality read. At novella length, this is a story that can be enjoyed in one sitting, and therefore is ideal for when you have an hour to spare or are looking to offer your mind an enjoyable, diverting break.
Highly recommended. I also suggest you check out the author’s extensive back catalogue, especially if you have an interest in romance or Alaska

As in life, Twisted Tales from the Universe offers a range of stories that include humor, murder, love, and situations that never end quite the way one would expect. Wild scenarios with deeper meaningsReviewed in the United States on April 15, 2021Verified PurchaseHaving read Collier’s Book 1 (Twisted Tales From a Skewed Mind), a collection of short stories and wild scenarios that leaves one happily awed, confused and a bit frightened, I found Book 2 equally entertaining, cryptic, bizarre, ironic and tinged with dark humor. In the twelve unique little tales, we find erotic and surreal imagery, sexual references, repressions, religious ponderings, ancient tribal rites, mythological and occult practices, perhaps a touch of insanity and delusion. It takes a well-honed imagination, and Collier has one, to conjure a morality tale about “morally made” fruit drink mixes, and to make palatable the need for procreation of the cross-species kind. We also “relate” to a hungry cave-dwelling dragon as he searches for a new home and a satisfying meal. Who hasn’t shuddered at the possibility of an immortal Robo-Nanny, contemplating aging in a world fraught with violence and suffering, who makes one last visit to a favorite child she raised, and doles out an appropriate punishment for his complicity. There is a tenderness and sincerity to Collier’s style, a true grasp of the twisty material, as though she has lived through these vignettes, in real time or through paranormal out-of-body experiences. But there are deeper meanings in the stories – whether they are romantic dream sequences, recollections of a childhood Christmas, a bird couple contemplating a custom-designed home in a neighborhood overrun by monsters: deeper meanings of survival by brawn and wit, of the need for procreation , of a teenager struggling with out-of-date belief systems and finding her own truth, of trying to grasp that disruptions in the earth’s crust are actually caused by a disruption of cosmic musical harmonies. You can look for these deeper meanings in the stories, or you can just read them for pure escapism. I will now move on to Book 3, Twisted Tales from the Desert, (if I can get past the creepy cover); no doubt the stories will be as creepy and mind-altering.
Her ship is her life. She almost sold her soul to get it. The job she took should be an in and out, easy money. Zoom over to planet SW 858, grab a sample of the metal a scout discovered and head home. There’s one minor problem. The planet isn’t uninhabited. Silver must be careful. The Mercenaries Union doesn’t like adverse publicity. The shaman king knows she’s on the way, the spirits warned him. With the Distani discovered, he must plot a course which will bring about their ultimate aim. A secret which could cost them the home they love must remain hidden. He needs the woman, for himself and for the planet he would destroy… if he must.
AlwaysReading5.0 out of 5 stars UniqueReviewed in the United Kingdom on June 17, 2021Verified PurchaseTo me, this was a unique story; a great mix of science-fiction, fantasy and romance. The two main characters were the perfect foil for each other – her, a tough and uncompromising mercenary, him, more in tune with nature and the spirits, though has a secret that must be kept. Both intelligent, each with an agenda.
A discovery of a planet and the scene is set.
A well-written tale with themes such as slavery, politics and exploration, and romance with a touch of humour.
Sci-fi fantasy romance. Pirates abducted her from her planet. The Mercenary Union ship which rescues her may be no better than the pirates. Captain Maden of the Long Sword refuses to take her home. The Messerian spy tells the captain he is not alone. There are others seeking to eliminate the pirates. He must keep the girl, Dahteste, close. She must not discover she is simply bait in the larger game they play. What gift does the girl have which makes her such a prize? The predator his ancestors used to be claws it way to the surface around the girl. He wants things he shouldn’t. He craves Dahteste.
