Emlyn Goode is a writer who also happens to be a witch. Or maybe it’s the other way around. She, and her creator Susan Solomon, live in upstate New York near Niagara Falls. In this outing, Emlyn attends a meeting of her writers group and gets astrally transported to an area amusement park that’s being torn down to put up condos. She’s prompted in this trip by a new member of her group. When that new member turns up dead, Emlyn finds herself compelled to investigate. It doesn’t help that she’s a suspect and her new boyfriend, the assistant Chief of Police, has to treat her as a suspect.

The book is set around Halloween, and I happened to read it while waiting for trick-or-treaters at my house, so I found it especially timely. It’s a good cozy mystery. Emlyn needs to use her skills as a witch and good old gumshoe work to crack this case. Oh, and she’s helped by Elvira, the “talking” cat. I found this book very enjoyable.

Review of Chance by Carolyn Bowen

Chance is a gripping psychological thriller that takes the lid off the underbelly of Atlanta, Georgia, the various cultures at play, the sleaze, the Chinese mafia. Adding to the intrigue, the involvement of the CIA. Meet tough, no-nonsense lawyer Sydney Jones, her beefy bodyguard-lover Walker and washed-up rock star Roxanne who attempts to lure Walker back to her side and ends up accidentally dead for her trouble. I particularly enjoyed the complexity of Sydney’s unexpected and unwanted pregnancy.

The narrative has a strong forward drive that makes for very fast reading. Written in third person personal, the story flits seamlessly from character to character in a fluid jump cut style, an approach that takes a moment to get used to but works well. Bowen’s pastiche of character-led vignette’s adds to the tension, lending a sense of urgency. Sacrificed is the deep point of view of the contemporary thriller – this technique applies especially to psychological thrillers – and Chance is light on dialogue and long action scenes, again, key drivers of the thriller genre. Nevertheless, Bowen has deployed a narrative style that captures the reader and keeps them turning the pages until the very end. Well written with good plotting and pacing and enough intrigue and twists to keep you on your toes, Chance will keep you guessing, waiting for the pay off at the end. Recommended to those after a lighter read in the thriller genre. Chance will also appeal to those after strong female leads.

July 1, 2017Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseWow. This book is phenomenal. The writing is exquisite, and the storyline is unlike anything I’ve ever read before. Little Livie is a shining star. I just adore her. It was suspenseful, shocking, and beautiful all at the same time. There are so many layers to Nicky’s writing. Highly recommended for a complex, thought-provoking read that goes so much deeper than a murder mystery.

TOTALLY UNPUTDOWNABLE READ–DEAD AGAIN BY SUSAN LYNN SOLOMON–AN EMLYN GOODE MYSTERY

dead again.jpg

Nothing gets past a descendant of Sarah Goode!!BySandra Vattimoon September 9, 2017Format: Kindle Edition

This is the second book in the Emlyn Goode Mystery series. It can be read as a stand-alone, but why miss out on the excitement of the first book?I love Emyln’s thought process. Her imagination tends to run away from her at the drop of a hat. Unfortunately, she tends to meander down dark roads into the terrifying abyss. She’s lucky to have her friend Rebecca and her unusual feline, Elvira, to help bring her back to reality.

In this story, fates are tempted and the past has returned to haunt the residents of The Falls. More murders. Are these cases tied to an unsolved murder from 42 years ago? How can Emlyn figure out what happened before she was even born?

I love the excitement and adventure found in this series. I enjoy following along as Emlyn pieces together clues to solve the mysteries. They are well-written clean reads. I look forward to the next case Emlyn comes across.

In Greenwich Village, Chicago, Niagara Falls, a Manhattan recording studio, Libby interviews people who’d known Kane. Like Max, each seems to hide something. A connection to her family? Then, one tumultuous night she learns Alicia Kane’s complete story, and this flips her world.

Jessica Menotti is frightened by a recurrent dream in which she’s chased through a maze by an unseen assailant. Hoping to escape the fears, she moves to Niagara Falls and takes a job as an Assistant District Attorney. Soon, though, she seems to be running through a real-life maze.

Called by Detective Mulroney to oversee the collection of evidence at a murder scene, Jessica is panicked when she sees an old yellow building then is startled by old bones dug up and a strange ring in the grave. It’s the first time she’s seen any of this, yet her instinct is to run from that place. At the same time, though she’s just met Mulroney she feels drawn to him as to someone she’s loved for years. Love, fear, where are these feelings coming from? Certainly not from any experience in this life.

When she is assigned a case involving drug smugglers, that maze dream and her sense of dread at the crime scene come into focus. Struggling to understand her sense of déjà vu leads to a vision of her death in a past life… and maybe her death in this one as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another keeper for my bookshelfReviewed in the United States on December 14, 2020Verified PurchaseWith a plot as full of twists and turns as the mazes in Jessie’s nightmares, this paranormal mystery has enough red herrings to stock a fish store. Clues abound, but what do they really mean? You can’t tell the good guys from the bad guys until the maze is run. Warning: if you value a good night’s sleep, don’t start reading this book at bedtime.

CELEBRATE SPRING WITH A GREAT READ! BELLA VITA- AN EMLYN GOODE MYSTERY BY SUSAN LYNN SOLOMON

WAS IT A RITUAL OR FLAT OUT MURDER?

A car burns in the parking lot behind Bella Vita Hair Salon. The corpse in the front seat has a short sword pushed into his ribs. Beneath the car is a cast-iron cauldron filled with flowers. This seems to be a sacrificial rite Rebecca Nurse had been teaching Emlyn Goode. But is it? The corpse has been identified as George Malone, and earlier on this summer solstice day, he and his wife had severe argument. Could it be that Angela Malone has murdered her husband? Prodded by Elvira, an overly-large albino cat that wants the case solved so she can get some sleep, to Rebecca’s dismay Emlyn again dips into her ancient relatives Book of Shadows to find the answer before her friend and neighbor, Detective Roger Fry, can.

5.0 out of 5 stars A UNIQUE VOICEReviewed in the United States on August 27, 2016Bella Vita Salon is the ‘go to’ place for news of import. It’s also the launch point from which author Susan Lynn Solomon unwraps her own unique brand of storytelling. Using first person, the author confers on character Emlyn Goode the dual tasks of protagonist and narrator, sharing her insights and uncertainties with an unflinching self-deprecation that made me feel like she was sitting across from me at a shared table. A novelette, BELLA VITA gives more of what we first discovered in Solomon’s THE MAGIC OF MURDER, a 5 star full length work that focused on a modern day witch coming to terms with her inherited powers. I sense that the author in her enthusiasm just had to share her down-to-earth character one more time before the follow-up to MAGIC releases. Thank you for that. BELLA VITA is a nice bridge between the novels. 5 stars
