“Joel meets Courtney and finds he’s falling in love but has his reservations” – Standing on His Own (New Beginnings Book 2) by Trish Edmisten

When his best friend decided to join the Army after high school graduation, there was no question Joel would join too. Best friends since kindergarten, the two of them did everything together, and this was no different. A routine mission changed their lives forever. Slade ended up paralyzed while Joel lost his leg. Joel never expected to live with one leg, but he wasn’t going to let it break him. Like he did with everything else, he adapted, and he accepted that he was never going to find love. Women might want to sleep with a war hero, but they sure as hell don’t want to live with and take care of one. That theory proves true until Courtney comes along. Beautiful, independent Courtney with her wicked sense of humor is the perfect woman for Joel. All he has to do is trust her enough to accept that he doesn’t have to stand on his own anymore.

Edmisten has a wonderful gift!

I love how Trish Edmisten brings her characters to life and puts them in realistic situations. This is the second book I’ve read by her.
Joel is self-conscience about his missing leg, but his best friend, Slade, is paralyzed and will spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair. They joke and tease each other but when the PTSD hits they’re there for each other.
Then Joel meets Courtney and finds he’s falling in love but has his reservations.
I couldn’t put this marvelous book down!
I highly recommend Standing on His Own!

Loved it!

Excellent easy-to-read story about recovering from traumatic experiences. Dori and Jessie each had tragic pasts that held them back from having loving relationships. Dori fled a physically abusive relationship and Jessie was trying to recover from PTSD. Both felt the other one could help them heal. With time and the help of the family, they were able to make it through. Hope to read more about both couples!

Great book during difficult times

This is the first book I’ve read by this author. It was a great short great with a lot of feeling in it. It was told during the civil war when confederates had to help the union as well as their own. A nurse, Rosa, was taking care of a Union soldier who had gotten critically hurt. While at the makeshift confederate hospital, Rose took care of Russell. When he got better, he kept getting hurt and taking supplies to the other union soldiers. So he kept showing up at the hospital while during this horrible time, Rosa and Russell fell in love. It wasn’t the best of times, since they were from opposite sides. The story gives us a glimpse of the past and how hard the times have been. A very good short read.

“The story shows the reality of a life of a paralyzed man.” – Coming Back Broken (New Beginnings Book 3) by Trish Edmisten

At the age of eighteen, Slade couldn’t wait to join the Army and get away from the boredom of small-town living. Two years later, his life is irrevocably changed when an IED blast leaves him paralyzed from the waist down. Though he’s back in the one place he was determined to get away from, things could be worse. At least he’s got a good group of friends to help him out, and that will have to be enough. No woman wants to be stuck with a broken man. Then Mac comes crashing into his life, stirring up feelings that Slade never thought he would feel again. As much as he wants her, Slade can’t believe she feels the same. Will his insecurities keep them apart, or will Mac be able to convince Slade she loves him the way he is? Author’s Note: Although this book is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone. This is a 68K word novel with a guaranteed HEA.

In this second book of the New Beginnings, all the characters from the first book are back, and we get to see more of Joel and his best friend, Slade. Both of them have suffered both physically and emotionally after their time in the army, and they are trying their best to cope. This story centers around Joel and the girl he meets, Courtney. Their first couple of encounters don’t go well, but still, there is something between them, and Joel is determined to pursue a relationship with Courtney. This book delves into PTSD (which both Joel and Slade suffer from) and the difficulties living with it.
