“I highly recommend “tunneling” through ‘Shadows and Lies’!” – “Shadows & Lies” (Carson Reno Mystery Series – Book 16) by Gerald W. Darnell

All Carson Reno Mystery Series Books are standalone novels. It is not necessary to read them in any particular order.
What happens when a rich client, three beautiful women, a shifty businessman, a gambler and a missing spouse are all suspected of murder? The results are a merry-go-round of shadows and lies in a house of cards with clues almost as old as Carson.
Greed, blackmail, infidelity, murder, serial killers and a twenty year old crime spin a tale that is practically unbelievable – with the truth masked behind a story that nobody wants told.
This old fashion ‘whodunit’ takes Carson Reno and his crew on a complicated adventure, which has too many victims and too many suspects.
Come along and help Carson find the clues and discover the truth as he tries to make sense of all the

Book a Room at the Peabody Hotel

Having read my first Carson Reno novel, ‘Dead End,’ the 13th in this hard-boiled, detective Mystery series, I eagerly selected another—‘Shadows and Lies,’ the 16th standalone book. Drawn to the hallmark ring tones of the Sixties, and the aura of actual places cited by the author, I willingly booked a room at the Peabody Hotel for my reading sojourn.

The prominent Dumont family, proprietors of the prestigious Dumont Hotel chain under the auspices of Matthew Dumont, provide a strong case for Carson Reno to take on via his Drake Detective Agency at the Peabody. For starters, Matthew’s son Brigham’s third wife is missing. The first one died under mysterious circumstances. You’ll find out if the second was murdered by a serial killer or not.

Besides the whodunit, like Reno, you’ll want to know what else is going on—and why!

If all of the tantalizing tidbits of this novel aren’t enough for you—serial killers, a twenty-year-old armed robbery, murders left and right, greed, infidelity, lies, Mob influence, bogus security reports, and false identities—there’s all the other hallmark ring tones of the Sixties you become privy to:

Constantly lighting up. Gumshoes wearing suits. Conducting biz inside a lounge or bar knocking back a few beers or Jack Daniels and coke. And, dig these character names: Cheese, Spider Webb, Tucker Baggett, Rags Tobin, and John Dho.

I highly recommend “tunneling” through ‘Shadows and Lies’! However, if Lydia Longstreet can’t get a straight answer from Carson Reno, I doubt any reader will either, as to why Marion Dumont’s pair of pantyhose was under his bed.

Another great Carson Reno story!

Carson is now on the other side of the law, or at least that’s the way it looks. It’s a great new story for Carson, and full of unpredictable twists and mysteries. I am a big fan of Darnell and of course, Carson, so I was very excited to read this new story. It’s one of my favorites of the series, but of course, Carson is one of my favorite characters. It’s a hard-hitting, magnificent bout of storytelling. Couldn’t put it down until the end!

Severed Finger!

The Black and White pictures mixed in with the story is classic! The Jack Daniels, the butcher knife, and the severed finger. Darnell’s style of writing, along with the sparse photos, paints a vivid picture in my mind and keeps me turning the pages. I’ve read one Carson Reno book before this and have to admit I am hooked. I don’t think Gerald Darnell can top this Reno Carson story. If you are going to read a Reno Carson, this is the one!

Another Thrilling Carson Reno Mystery

Darnell pens a magnificent mystery thriller in Sin and Stilettos. This is book 21, yes I said 21, of Darnell’s Carson Reno series. First, I’m a big fan of Darnell’s writing and storytelling abilities. His imagination is something very impressive. I am also a big fan of Carson Reno. There is something about these suspenseful and intense mysteries that have interconnected stories, and they are filled with twists and turns. Just when you think you figured it out, another twist. So enjoyable. Darnell’s story is almost majestical as his words come to life, and Reno just jumps off the pages. Sin and Stilettos has an interesting set of characters, and it works for even at a time gone by. It’s a book that you can’t put down until the end, where everything comes together, and still takes your breath away. You can read the Reno stories as standalone, but I recommend reading each one, and enjoying every mystery and every action of Carson Reno! I look forward to reading many more stories by this author. This book is a definite recommendation by Amy’s Bookshelf Reviews.

Another Magnificent Carson Reno caper!

As a big fan of Darnell, I absolutely love the Carson Reno series. Each story can be read independently, but each story is worth the read! Another interesting case drops in Reno’s lap, and it is more than just what it seems at first. This author brings the stories to life. There is a great chemistry between the cast of characters and a depth that makes them realistic and flawed. Reno soon finds out that his missing persons’ case is more than typical. The clues, the twists and turns, and its ups and downs, The Innocent Stranger is a magnificent read. The thrills and intrigue is written clearly and the characterizations are engrossing. Love this story. It is always a joy to read this author’s stories and the reader is always brought on a bumpy and intriguing journey. The author’s technique of intense characters and great plotlines is a gift. I like the addition of the graphics, and how Reno tells his own story and his perceptions of what is going on. He has quite a band of friends that keeps the story moving. I look forward to reading many more stories by this author. This book is a definite recommendation by Amy’s Bookshelf Reviews.

An exciting Carson Story!

Yes, I love reading Darnell’s work. I also love, and I mean love, Carson Reno, and was very excited to read this one. First, what I like about any of Darnell’s Carson Reno’s books is the way that writes it so anyone can pick up any volume of his multitude of books and read it. But, once you read it, you end up wanting more. Lack of Candor was no different. Reno is on a new and interesting case, and nothing is as it seems. I like how Carson tells his story and what happens, especially his thoughts about himself and the others around him. It makes for great storytelling. The story was thrilling, and though plot-driven, the characters, were what makes for the remarkable and exciting story. I like that he introduces a cast of characters, so much that I’ve taken that idea from him with my own work. An edge-of-your-seat, savor-every-word, page-turner!

Masterfully done again.

This is my second Carson Reno novel. Besides the fact I enjoy detective stories and the ‘whodunit’ of this genre, Author Darnell, makes it a pleasurable & enjoyable read in the manner he ‘pulls you’ into the settings. Couple that with vivid characters, and you have another winner, which I enjoyed from start to finish.

Murder My Darling

HEATHER C.

Exciting! Total Page-Turner!

This was the first time I read one of Mr. Carson Reno, a private detective’s, adventures and I couldn’t put it down. I am more of a romance/fantasy reader myself, but the story is so well-developed that it caught my attention right from the beginning (the prologue) when the murder of a crime/mystery author takes place as soon as she types the last words to her newest manuscript and in the cabin of her boat. I must say that I didn’t find it clichè, but pretty poetic. Soon after, Mr. Reno takes the scene and, without having any recollection of his last hours or events and plus being unfortunate enough to have been in the wrong place at the wrong time, he receives the honor of becoming the prime suspect in Darling’s murder (the boat’s Capitan murder being added to his charges just as well).“It’s not whiskey it’s Scotch, and you know how I hate that stuff. I wasn’t drinking… somebody hit me over the head and…and I guess used my gun to shoot…shoot whoever. I suppose somewhere in the process they poured a bottle of Scotch over me and put my handcuffs on the dead woman. I have no idea – I don’t know any more than what I’ve already told you. As you can see, that doesn’t sound promising to help the detective. Still, the author plays a smart move as he invites us to travel a few hours into the past in order to get to know what has happened between our (main) characters and while also giving ourselves the chance to try to put some clues together and eventually solve the murder. Ms. Darling, protection isn’t what I really do…”,Mr. Reno told Ms. Marlow Darling. Setting the mystery mood from the beginning, we soon find ourselves traveling from Memphis (Tennessee) to one of US’ most iconic and touristic places – welcome to New Orleans! – and where things aren’t always what they seem, while we join our detective in his search for Ms. Darling’s missing manuscript, his innocence and, consequently, the truth. I just need you to keep me out of jail so I can do what I need to do. This whole thing is nuts, and somebody has done a good job of framing me for two murders. I intend to find out who that ‘somebody’ is.” And so he does. “Murder my Darling” is an amazing novel and an exciting page-turner, which I truly recommend to anyone who might wish to dive into a great and original detective’s plot. And, in being not only a voracious reader but also a Brazilian myself, I feel like I need to end this review by sharing that I actually felt as if I were traveling to the places where the scenes take action, a courtesy of Mr. Gerald great writing skills.
