“Imaginative and original zombie apocalypse novel.” – Viral Dawn: (Viral Series Book 1) by Jade Lazlow

What if your world changed in a split second, destroying everything you thought you knew and thrusting you into a world where your very survival depends on every move you make, every decision, and every step you take? Every. Move. Matters.
An explosion at the army depot unleashes a deadly cloud carrying a genetically engineered virus that turns people into flesh-eating zombies. High school senior, Casey Williams has taken refuge at the school with friends and others who managed to survive the blast and ensuing viral outbreak. They’re safe. For now. But supplies are running short, and tempers are running shorter as Casey realizes the time is coming they will need to get out. She is determined to lead her friends to safety only to discover that she’s led them into even greater danger. Determined to save her friends, she fights the living and the undead in her quest to survive.

Imaginative and original zombie apocalypse novel

Viral Dawn is a zombie apocalypse story that is much more than a comic book or short story expanded into a TV series that gradually becomes repetitive and redundant. First, there is the character development so readers get to know the characters before the real action starts. I love the way the author narrates what the main character is thinking so you really get to know her as the story progresses.

Viral Dawn is a story about how an average person can rise to the occasion and become a hero. In this case, the main character Casey only wants to take care of her mildly disabled foster brother Derek. But Casey is separated from Derek and reluctantly becomes the leader of a group of friends and strangers trying to survive the zombie outbreak.

Unlike other zombie apocalypse stories, Viral Dawn explains what caused the dead to begin walking and feeding on living humans. I don’t want to compare it to The Walking Dead but I do want to say that if Skyler Rankin was a writer on The Walking Dead TV series, I would still be watching it. The same old problem with shows like The Walking Dead or Lost always seems to appear after a season or two. Writers start to burn out and become unimaginative and repetitive. They always seem to fall back on writing in different groups of survivalists fighting each other and lose the imaginative science fiction aspects of the story. Not so with Viral Dawn.

Author Skyler Rankin has written an interesting, exciting story that takes readers in a different direction than you might expect. There is no predictability here. There are surprises around every corner. Viral Dawn is a true science fiction novel. Best of all, it doesn’t end in a cliffhanger. Although it is part of a series, it is a self-contained novel with an ending that has closure. I was not left hanging but I liked the book enough that I plan to read the sequel as soon as possible. A solid 5 stars for Viral Dawn by Skyler Rankin.

THOUGHT-PROVOKING STORIES–WHAT IF BY FRAN LEWIS

  Thought-provoking

Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2020

I chose to read this book after receiving a free copy. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

What If? has six dark stories and a poem that will make you think. I liked them, but I particularly two that rang true during the times that we are in:

“Confined!” is about Fern who self-isolates due to fear of the virus. See what can happen when someone isolates both their mind and body.

“One Race: On World – The Year 2050”: the government makes everyone multicolored, everyone works, everyone is paid the same amount no matter their job, and no one can have their own opinions (sounds a lot like 1984). Then, new neighbors move in…

“The Match” is a poem that’s disturbing. The other three stories are pretty good; they’re interesting and thought-provoking. What If? is a good book to read for when you don’t have much time (the stories are just 6 to 16 pages each) but want something that will make you think.

“I would recommend this series to anyone who loves a good zombie book.” – Viral Storm: A Dystopian Zombie Apocalypse Thriller (Viral Series Book 2) by Jade Lazlow

Line Blurb

“The sores forming with unholy speed on Harley’s arms and legs confirmed the infection was spreading. Its poison surged through her veins with such momentum that she could feel its sting in the current of her pulse. Unrelenting pain seared every cell, and she struggled to maintain focus, despite the fever raging in her blood.” – Viral Storm
Viral Storm continues the story of Casey Williams and her friends attempting to flee the country and expose the evil work of BioGenetics, creators of the virus that spawned the zombie apocalypse. Euthanizing her best friend, who’d been infected with the virus, was the most soul-crushing thing Casey could have imagined, but that was nothing compared to what happens next… Like the first book in the series, Viral Dawn, Viral Storm has gore, violence, and dark themes common in zombie apocalyptic fiction, but the book focuses more on the characters’ lives than other elements. The story centers on strong, young adult female characters as do similar books in female-centered dystopian fiction like The Hunger Games, Twilight, Divergent, and The Year of the Flood. Join Casey as her struggle for survival continues in Viral Storm.

Amazingly good series

The much-anticipated sequel to Viral Dawn is here! And it was sooo worth the wait! This is such an amazing series. I could see it being a tv series or movie, they are so well written. The characters are so well written that you get so invested in them and their stories.
I could not put this book down. I read it straight through in one sitting, it sucks you in and you have to know what’s going to happen next. Casey is such a strong character. She’s been put through the wringer but still manages to rise up and keep pushing through. I love that in this one you also get other characters’ POVs.
I would recommend this series to anyone who loves a good zombie book. It’s labeled as YA but honestly, adults would love it too. Book 3 can not come soon enough!

“Intriguing and suspenseful” – Blood Master (Book 1 of the G.O.D.S Series) by Award-Winning Author Kirsten Campbell

The G.O.D. series must be read in order

It’s 2052 and Earth has lost two-thirds of its population to the Great War. Many more lives were lost to earthquakes, the Clover Virus, and the Death Plague. Years later, survivors were clumped into factions. Two of the factions, the Guild and the Brotherhood, have fought over medical supplies and food for years. The fight is coming to a head as manpower dwindles, and the struggle becomes one to gain numbers, even if said numbers are children…
Griffin Storm is hiding out in Underground Atlanta. He’s an albino man that can manipulate glass and crystal, and he uses his special abilities to raid warehouses and old buildings for food and supplies for the abandoned children that live underground. During a raid, he meets Tassta Vinetti, a resident of the Brotherhood fortress. He is taken to the fortress and chaos ensues as Tassta, her twin brother Penn, and her uncle, try to keep their new visitor and his untold powers a secret.
Griffin is the only survivor of the Guild’s deadly experiments, and they hunt for him because his survival will have dynamic consequences on the world. The Guild believes that Griffin will transform into a G.O.D., a genetically enhanced Omni-dimensional being with limitless abilities.
Will Griffin transform into a G.O.D.? Will he save the children of the Underground from their tragic life? Only time will tell…

Intriguing and suspenseful

A friend recommended this book to me, and I found it to be an incredibly exciting dystopian adventure. The characters are well defined, and there’s a lovely slow-building romance.
The main character, and Blood Master, Griffin, is complex and kind. Griffin is a survivor. Not only of the Great War, Clover Virus, and Death Plague but also of the cruel experiments from the evil Guild Faction.
I found myself breathlessly rooting for Griffin as he struggles to hide his identity, and undergo a transformation, all while protecting orphaned children and the woman he loves.

November 12, 2052: Earth has lost two-thirds of its population to the Great War. Many more lives have been lost to earthquakes, the Clover Virus, and the Death Plague. 5 glowing stars from me!

Having eagerly read Blood Master, I simply had to read this story too, especially knowing how imaginative and emotional this author’s creative mind was likely to be. Her stories ooze with great insight into the dynamics between characters while her imagination is just on full throttle, adding so much essence to the plot.
The story is like a layered cake, with Griffin and Tassta’s romance simply added as a delicious icing on the top for me…my goodness, I swooned. But, the romantic part did not distract me from the suspenseful segments of the story.
Just like in the Blood Master, the characters in Blood Phase are well-established and easily refreshed my recall of them so clearly in my head. Almost as if I was in the story, I got so caught up in it and I was compelled by my urges to read the story until I finished it, with the sun slowly peeking over the horizon in the morning.
I can’t wait to read the next sequel!!! I hope they make a movie of this story…Imagine watching it in 3D! *swoons*
